Shooting is one of the safest activities because of the attention paid to safety. Please read and follow all of the rules and guidelines below to ensure a safe shooting experience for you and those around you. The club's safety role is documented here and the risk assessment is here.

The Four Firearms Safety Rules

The four fundamental rules are universally accepted throughout all shooting disciplines and all applications involving the handling and use of firearms.

1. Treat all guns as if they are loaded. When receiving a gun, always verify it is clear and safe yourself, don't take somebody's word for it. You will be taught how to clear every gun in the club. If you put a gun down for even a second, check its condition when you pick it up again.
   
2. Never point the gun at anything you're not willing to destroy. Most importantly, this means don't point the gun at any part of yourself or anyone else. This means if the gun does discharge, it won't hit anything valuable.
   
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and ready to fire. This is perhaps the most difficult rule for beginners to remember. Keep the finger completely outside of the trigger guard and index it against the frame of the gun.
   
4. Be sure of your target and what's beyond it. Make sure you are shooting at the intended target. Ensure there is a proper backstop or clear area behind the target, as the bullet can miss or pass through the target altogether.
   

Range codes of conduct

1. Always obey the safety rules.
2. No running or horseplay in the range.
3. Keep the noise to a minimum in the range (not the clubroom). Switch phones off or put them into silent mode.
4. No smoking on the range.
5. Know the position of the first aid kid, which is on the wall in the clubroom next to the door that leads into the other ranges.
6. Sign the log-in book everytime you enter the range.

Range safety rules

1. Never point a gun at anyone, even if it's unloaded.
2. Never put down a loaded gun.
3. Never point the gun anywhere except downrange, even if it has malfunctioned.
4. If you encounter a problem at the firing point, raise your non-shooting arm and await the assistance of the range officer.
5. Always obey the range officer's commands whilst on the range.
6. Leave guns in a safe condition (unloaded and visibly cleared) when not using them.
7. Never move forward of the firing point unless told to do so by the range officer.
